"CG Control
The FCMC uses fuel to control aircraft CG since we all know that a rear CG reduces trim drag. Auto-control of begins when climbing through FL255 (clean, gear up, THS tank not full, inners>6250 kg, CG off target) and is terminated when descending through FL245 or when FMGS time to destination is <35 mins {<75 mins in the event of trim tank forward transfer pump failure}. Crew can only forward transfer fuel. Normally there is only one aft fuel transfer per flight, unless CG is forward of target by more than 2% and the trim tank quantity is <3000kg. Aft transfer ceases when computed CG = target CG minus ½%, trim tank high level sensor becomes wet, inners=6250 kg, T TANK pb is selected FWD or a transfer to inners is manually selected. Trim tank fuel usually comes from the centre tank or, if empty, the inners, in which case the #2 and #3 crossfeeds open. If the inners imbalance exceeds 500kg, transfer is stopped on the lighter side until balance.
Auto forward transfer of fuel occurs when computed CG = target CG, inners=4000kg (stops at 5000), 35mins/FL245 or the jettison system is selected to the open position. Auto forward transfer is normally / always to the inners but may be to the centre tank when it is not empty (?). Transfer is stopped if the inners reached the high level switch, restarting when the contents have dropped by 2000kg. In normal ops, the forward transfer pump moves trim tank fuel forwards. The pump starts, if there is fuel in the trim tank, when the gear and slats are up and runs until the tank is empty or ISOL is selected. If the pump fails, fuel is transferred by gravity, but the FCMC stops forward transfer by closure of the ISOL valve if the attitude >3° for >1min. For manual transfer, when the T TANK pb is pressed, the FWD light illuminates WHT and the trim tank isolation valve and aux forward transfer valve open and the 2 aft transfer valves and the trim pipe isolation valve closes. Manual transfer is to the centre tank through the forward transfer pump: centre tank overflow must be manually prevented. If the centre tank contains fuel and CG is forward of 23%, the transfer is in 2 steps: the trim tank is decreased to 2400kg when the centre tank drops to 17tonnes and then emptied when the centre tank is empty. If the T TANK FEED selector is moved to ISOL, the transfer line is isolated by closing the trim tank isolation valve, the trim tank inlet valve, the aux forward transfer valve, the trim pipe isolation valve and the APU isolation valve. APU operation is impossible. The aux forward transfer valve on the A330 feeds into the refuel/defuel line."
